What I’m Reading: 2013

I am finding that I have less time to read these days than I have in the past.
But, that obviously hasn’t stopped me from creating quite a list of titles I hope to read through this year.

From top to bottom:
Divine Design, by John MacArthur
Alone with God, by John MacArthur
The Hole in Our Holiness, by Kevin DeYoung
Beautiful Girlhood, revised by Karen Andreola
Women of Faith and Courage, by Vance Christie
Becoming A Woman of Spiritual Passion, by Donna Morley
Set Apart, by R. Kent Hughes
God’s Priorities for Today’s Woman, by Lisa Hughes
A Gospel Primer for Christians, by Milton Vincent
Practicing Hospitality, by Pat Ennis and Lisa Tatlock
The Christian Race, by J.C. Ryle
Choosing Gratitude, by Nancy Leigh DeMoss
A Place of Quiet Rest, by Nancy Leigh DeMoss
God in Everyday Life, by Brad Brandt and Eric Kress
The Heart of Anger, by Lou Priolo
Raising Real Men, by Hal and Melanie Young
The Joy of a Word Filled Family, by John Barnett
Day by Day with the English Puritans

Some of these are books that I started reading last year, but have not finished. Others are new additions to my “library.” And, some I’ve read before, but want/need to read again. This is not an exhaustive list…believe it or not, there are a few books that I would still like to add to this stack! And, as the year goes on, I’m sure I will do just that. But for now, this is what I am starting with…

How about you? What are you hoping (or planning) to read this year?

  1. Love your list 🙂
I’m trying to add in a bit more fiction this year…maybe a couple more by Wendell Berry, A Tale of Two Cities, The Blue Castle, throw in a few Nancy Drews to read along side our daughter 🙂

Right now I’m reading Randy Alcorn’s collection of Spurgeons’s essays on Heaven and Desperate for a book review.

I want to read Elisabeth Elliot’s book about Amy Carmichael…how could that combination not be incredible?

    1. Kara,
I think I try to add more fiction in every year…and it just never seems to happen. And, obviously, it would appear as if I didn’t even try at all this year! 🙂 I am “pre-reading” some of my daughter’s “fun” books (meaning, non-school reading), so maybe that counts?
I am interested to read your thoughts on “Desperate.” I almost picked it up while I was at the bookstore the other day…but we already had 5 books between us (just my husband and I), so I put it back. Maybe another time…
And, yes, “A Chance to Die,” incredible. 🙂

  2. You’ve got a great of books here! At least one of your books is on my list for 2013, and you’ve reminded me of several that my daughter or husband have on their shelves that I need to borrow.

I’m a huge reader, but tend to be too heavy on the fiction side (although I am pretty picky about what fiction I read). I’m joining another blogger’s challenge to read 24 books in 12 months — all physical books that I already own (http://bit.ly/TKYVsz). I hope I’ll approach each book a bit differently this year, as I’m just finishing up Lit! A Christian Guide to Reading Books.

I look forward to hearing more about how your reading goes this year!

    1. Suzanne,
Lit! is another one that I would love to read…although I think my husband has it hidden away at his office right now. 🙂
24 books in 12 months…I have 18 in this stack, and that is probably a bit overly-optimistic! 🙂

  3. Great list! The Hole in our Holiness is an excellent book! I highly recommend it, and I believe you will enjoy 🙂

This year, I need to finish reading The New Dare to Discipline, and I want to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen Covey. I would love to finish The Complete Works of E.M. Bounds on Prayer, but we will see…

My goal last year was to read one book a month, but I only read seven (Hole in our Holiness was one of them). I haven’t yet determined all of the ones I want to finish this year, so I’ll just start with 7 Habits and ask the Lord to lead me form there.

    1. Jodi,
I really like Kevin DeYoung. Admittedly, I was hooked on this particular one after reading his assessment of camping. 😉
      I haven’t read E.M. Bounds on Prayer…although I know I’ve seen it around here…somewhere. Another one I’d like to add to the stack…”someday.” 🙂

  4. I just got a copy of “Love Does” by Bob Goff.

I also finished a 3-county scavenger hunt at libraries to obtain a translation of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” for a class I’m subbing on Monday. (Which means, I will be reading that starting in 5 mins!).

I think I have the “5 Love Languages” by Chapman and Campbell; and “The Principle of the Path” by Andy Stanley.

    To start …

    And the Bible–a year-long endeavor. =)

All this to say, I read “The Heart of Anger” a number of years ago and really enjoyed it. Might be revisiting it this year as well, since you mentioned it. Thanks!

    Courtney
