Give Thanks – 12: Music
I am thankful for music – both vocal and instrumental, classical and contemporary - that points to our Lord, and helps me to worship Him throughout the day. I love the old hymns, but I also love some of the contemporary songs. I am so thankful for songs that, old or new, are based on Scripture, that praise and emphasize the attributes of our God, and are full of solid doctrine and good theology! And, I love that my daughter loves these songs as well! Some of her current favorites often match mine: “the Stand Up song” (Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus) from This Hope’s A Capella Hymns, or “the Valley Song” (The Valley of Vision) from Sovereign Grace’s Valley of Vision, or “Let Your Kingdom Come” also from Sovereign Grace, from Songs for the Cross Centered Life.
Here is a little glimpse of what we are listening to these days…
A Capella Hymns, This Hope – I love all of their albums, but hymns are always a favorite, and the a capella style of these is especially fun!
All Things New, Steven Curtis Chapman – Again, I love all of his music, but this one has gotten a lot of play recently.
Valley of Vision, Sovereign Grace – Songs based on Puritan prayers from one of my favorite books, by the same name. These songs are great anytime of day, of course, but they are an especially great supplement to devotional or prayer time.
Songs for the Cross Centered Life, Sovereign Grace – We sing several of these songs in church on Sundays, and, because we listen to them throughout the week, Hannah is easily able to join in the times of corporate worship on Sunday morning!
Seeds of Faith and Seeds of Encouragement, Seeds Family Worship – Scripture set to music. Technically, I guess these are for the kids, but I love them too! And, I love hearing Hannah singing Scripture throughout the day. And, probably because of my Awana Bible Quizzing days, I am kind of a stickler about learning the references with the verses…and these songs include the reference!! Yay! (My only quibble – and it is a small one – is that these songs are in the NIV, and we use the ESV for memorization around here, which occasionally makes for some interesting or slightly confusing combinations when the two come together. But, either way, I am thankful to see her hiding God’s Word in her heart!!)
