Thanksgiving 2017

IMG_7617wmIt has been 9 years since we got to spend Thanksgiving with my side of our family. My parents hosted the day at their new home…just down the street. We contributed dessert…made mostly by my kids. And, it was so fun to see these cousins playing together and enjoying each other!

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!”
~Psalm 107:1 (ESV)

Happy Thanksgiving, from our family to yours.

Happy 4th Birthday, Rebekah!

10My Sweet and Spunky Rebekah!

You are loud, energetic, dramatic, and silly. Sitting still and quietly are not your strengths.  You do nothing halfway.

You have really surprised me this year by pouring that energy and determination into our school days, and becoming an eager and enthusiastic student! You love our Pre-K times, and are flying through the lessons that I have prepared for you each day…and still asking for more!

You adore your siblings. I am so thankful for the sweet friendship I already see between you and Rachel. I love hearing you play and talk together after we have tucked you in for the night, or when you wake up in the morning. And, you love being one of the big girls with your “just me and Hannah” time. You and Titus seem to enjoy tormenting each other more than playing right now…but when push comes to shove (literally!), you’ll also defend and protect each other!

Although you are definitely my loudest child, you have such a sweet, tender heart. You are always so quick to comfort your little sister when she is sad or hurt. And you are quite the little prayer warrior. You are so faithful to pray for your siblings, daddy, or friends from church. And you are our family cheerleader…always encouraging others, with your big smiles and sweet hugs.

It is my constant prayer that the Lord would draw you to Himself, and that He would use your tender heart and fierce determination for His glory.

I love you, my sweet Bekah-Bug! Happy Birthday

Solar Eclipse 2017

We weren’t in the path of totality, but I still thought it would be fun (and yes, even though we haven’t started school yet) educational, for the kids to watch a solar eclipse.

A friend gave us 2 pairs of Eclipse Glasses. But, I was still hesitant to encourage my kids to look at the sun. Even through safety glasses.

So, we made some simple viewers

083

The kids had fun trying them out, figuring out the best way to see the semi-circle of the moon passing in front of the sun, and tracking the progress of the eclipse throughout the day.

I read that the gravitational pull is different during an eclipse.
Supposedly, this means that a broom can stand up by itself, and an egg can stand on its end.
So, just for fun, we decided to try it out…IMG_4133Here is the broom…standing up all by itself!

And, here is the egg…082It stood up all by itself too!

(I have no idea if either of these are actually due to a difference in gravity during a solar eclipse. Several websites claimed that both are possible at various times throughout the year. We may have to do a follow-up experiment and see if either one happens again!)

I did end up giving in, and allowing the kids to take turns using the glasses.
After some very stern lectures on how we never, ever, ever look directly at the sun!
We also invited our friend, Mrs. Vicky, to come over and watch with us during the peak of the eclipse.

(We are having a little bit of remodeling done in our entryway, so there was a large piece of sheetrock waiting to be cut in the front yard. It was perfectly placed under the tree, which allowed the crescent shape to show through all of the leaves! So, the kids took turns using the glasses, and watching the shadows!

Bon Anniversaire, Hannah!

043Hannah loves all things French. She is constantly checking out whatever books she can find in the library on France: the country, culture, food, and language.

So, a (somewhat) “French” or “Parisian” themed birthday party was her obvious choice. We decorated in her favorite colors…pastel turquoise, pink, and purple…with gold accents.

We decided to stick with family birthdays this year, so we FaceTimed with Grandma and Grandpa in California, in the afternoon so that she could open their gifts “with” them. Then Grammy and Grampy joined us later in the evening for dinner, dessert, and more gifts.

Our sort-of-French menu was entirely chosen by the birthday girl: Croque Monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwiches), decidedly not-French pasta salad, and Passion Iced Tea-Lemonade. Instead of a traditional cake, she opted for an assortment of treats: Macarons (her new favorite treat!), cream puffs, Madeleines, and Mini-Palmiers.

It was a quiet day, but we had fun celebrating our sweet 12-year-old!

Happy 12th Birthday, Hannah

06Happy 12th Birthday, Hannah!

My sweet Hannah girl. How is it that each year seems to go faster than the one before it? You continue to amaze me, as you become more grown up each day.

You love being in the kitchen. Baking is your favorite. You made a wonderful chocolate chip pecan pie for our family Thanksgiving, and even took on the task of making your own birthday cake to share at our church fellowship lunch! But, you are also willing to help with the less glamorous tasks…like making everyday meals, and washing a sink-full of dirty dishes without complaint.

You started playing the flute this year, and you really seem to have a natural talent. You have learned and improved so much. I love hearing you play, and seeing your discipline and hard work pay off.

Your brother and sisters absolutely adore you. (With good reason!) You entertain them endlessly with stories and creative games. You are patient with them, are constantly looking after them, helping them, and comforting them…even when you don’t “have” to. And they enjoy your time, the special one-on-one attention you give them, and especially your toys. “Sleep-Night-Overs” in your room are probably the biggest treat you could give them!

You are reliable, and competent, and more than able to handle all that we ask you do. And, we do ask you to do a lot. And, you do it with a good attitude, and you try to do it well.

But, I love that you are still my sweet, creative, artistic, dreamer. You entertain your siblings endlessly with your creative stories and spontaneous games…which I think you enjoy just as much as they do. Your room is a treasure box of potential craftiness…beads, ribbon, stamps, tape, crayons, paper, pens, yarn… Pretty much anything you see has the possibility of being turned into some artistic creation.

It is a privilege to watch you grow into such a sweet, beautiful young lady. We are so thankful that the Lord gave you to our family.

Happy 12th Birthday, Hannah!!
